We were recently going over the personal property coverage with a first time home buyer and he said, “if my house burns down and my car is in the garage, will my home insurance cover it.”
And the answer is…..unfortunately, no.
In a standard home insurance policy there is a series of paragraphs in the personal property section entitled “property not covered.” One of the paragraphs in this section list “motor vehicles” as “property not covered.”
So are you just simply out of luck?
Not necessarily. For your car to be covered in this situation, you’ll need to ensure that you have auto insurance on the vehicle. The coverage that you’d be looking for on the auto insurance policy will generally be called comprehensive coverage. Some insurance companies call the coverage “other than collision” coverage. Nevertheless, it’s not your home insurance that would provide coverage in this situation.
