Today we’re talking about something that you may expect to be covered by your home insurance when it actually is not. Today we’re talking about water back up coverage. With water backing up we’re dealing with dirty water so we’re talking about a drain lines or sewage lines failing and that dirty water or sewage backing up into the home and causing damage to the floors and baseboard and furniture…..not to mention the clean-up.
Where is this mentioned in my policy?
A standard home insurance policy has a section of exclusions and in the exclusion’s section is a section for water damage. A sub-heading in this part of the policy typically states that water or water-borne material which backs up through sewers or drains or which overflows or is discharged from a sump, sump pump or related equipment is excluded from coverage. In other words, this section is saying that damage caused by water backing up through sewage or drain lines is not covered.
What should I do?
There is an endorsement to the policy which is typically available for all home insurance customers called water backup coverage. For a nominal fee, typically around $25 a year or so, you can add about $5000 of this coverage to your policy. My recommendation is to always add this optional coverage.
