Will home insurance cover the golf course’s golf cart that I wrecked?

A question we recently received was this “If I wreck a rented golf cart at a golf course, will my home insurance or auto insurance cover it?”

And the answer is……most likely your home insurance.

Let’s take a minute to explain how this works.  Most home insurance policies in Florida have a provision in the exclusions section of the policy that prohibits liability coverage from extending to a motorized vehicle.  However, it typically says that the exclusion does not apply to “A motorized golf cart when used to play golf on a golf course.”

What’s important to note here is that we’re talking about liability or, in other words, damage you cause while operating the golf cart.  This typically does not include damage to the golf cart itself.

What if I own the golf cart?

If you own the golf cart or use a golf cart for purposes beyond the golf course, you either need to inquire with your insurance agent about endorsing your homeowner’s insurance to cover the golf cart, if possible, or you need purchase a separate insurance policy for the golf cart itself.

Obviously, the most extensive coverage would be offered if you purchase the golf cart its own policy.
