We occasionally receive phone calls asking if damage to the home caused by certain insects is covered. Just last week we received a call from a homeowner who, after noticing a small hole near the roof of his home, found that carpenter wasps had found their way into the home and had caused damaged to a small section of the roof. The question is – would home insurance cover something like this?
What does the policy say…
The standard home insurance policy has verbiage that addresses these situations. Unfortunately, it’s in the exclusion section of the policy. The exclusion states that damage to the home caused by birds, rodents, insects, nesting or infestation is not covered in a standard home insurance policy.
Because of this it’s always a good idea to regularly inspect the exterior of your home for any exposed wood and/or exposed points of entry such as missing soffits. Doing so can potentially save your thousands of dollars in out of pocket repair expenses.
