If someone runs into your car and it turns out that they’re an uninsured motorist, do you know which coverage you need on your insurance policy, in the State of Florida, to ensure your vehicle is fixed?
And the answer isssss…
It’s collision coverage. Most people mistakenly believe that since you were hit by an uninsured motorist that you’ll need uninsured motorist coverage to repair your car. However, in Florida uninsured motorist coverage provides coverage for your injuries when your hit by an uninsured motorist. It can also provide coverage for your lost wages, pain and suffering, etc etc…but it provides no coverage for your vehicle repairs.
So what do I do?
Collision coverage, on the other hand, pays for repairs to your vehicle when it collides with another object. Now the unfortunate part is that the repairs in this situation are subject to your deductible. This means that even though you weren’t at fault, you’ll have to pay the deductible you chose when you purchased or renewed your policy.
However, many times, insurance companies will attempt to recoup their expenses and your deductible from the at-fault party through a process called subrogation if they can prove that the other party was at fault. So you’ll want to take photos of the incident, get contact details from any witnesses, and get the contact details from the at-fault party (such as their driver’s license if possible), get the at-fault parties tag number, call the police. Doing so can help your insurance company recover your hard-earned money.
