Does home insurance cover flooding?

Does home insurance cover flooding?

Well…..it depends.

In Florida, a home insurance policy written on an HO3 form will typically include coverage if your house is flooded but the coverage is generally limited to water damage cause by accidental discharge or overflow.  This means an appliance failed and caused water damage or a pipe burst and leaked into the home causing damage.

If the flooding, however, is caused by rising waters, such as a storm surge or from torrential rainfall, well your home insurance does not generally provide any coverage.

So what should you do?

If you’re concerned about damages from rising water floods not being covered by your home insurance, you need to buy flood insurance.  These policies are easy to obtain and the best part is that the federally backed policies have prices set by the National Flood Insurance Program so you won’t have to shop around to find the best price.
