What are wind mitigation inspections, and do I need one?
Wind mitigation inspections identify seven wind resistive features of the home. The more wind resistive features your home has, the more discounts you’ll get on the hurricane portion of your homeowners’ insurance.
What are the wind resistive features?
The wind resistive features include:
- Is the home build to the 2001 Florida building code?
- Is the roof built to the 2001 Florida building code?
- How is the roof deck attached to the home?
- How is the roof connected to the walls?
- What is the shape of the roof?
- Is there a secondary water barrier under the roof covering?
- Does the home have hurricane shutters?
What you need to know…
Many of these features are what they are – meaning you really can’t do anything to change them. For example, your home was either built to the 2001 Florida building code or it wasn’t. You either have a gable roof or you do not. However, there are a couple of things you can do that will give you a more favorable inspection which can result in a less expensive insurance policy.
One is a new roof and other is the opening protection credit. However, the biggest bang for your buck is going to be the opening protection credit. To get the opening protection credit, you will have to have every opening that contains glass protected with a verifiable measure of protection. This includes garage doors with glass, skylights, etc.
The inspectors will need to be able to prove to the insurance company that the home meets state requirement. They do this by looking for labels on windows, labels on metal panels, labels on garage doors and so on. If every opening is verifiably protected, then the hurricane portion of your insurance policy can be reduced considerably.
