Today we’re talking about a little know coverage on a home insurance policy that can be a tremendous help if someone is injured in your home or on your property – it’s called medical payments to others.
This is one of two coverages we commonly see on home insurance policies here in Brevard that help to protect your wallet if someone is injured at your home. The other, of course, being liability coverage. The difference between the two is that medical payments typically deal will smaller injuries and doesn’t typically require you to be found liable or negligent for payment to be made.
When does coverage apply?
Generally speaking, for coverage to apply, the injured party must not be a resident of the home and their injuries need to be accidental. There are some exclusions to the coverage – such as injuries as a result of business, for example. But if an accidental injury occurs to a guest at your home, the policy will typically cover expenses for medical or surgical expenses, x-rays, dental services, ambulance services, hospital expenses, professional nursing, prosthetic devices among other things. Also, it’s important to note here that deductibles typically do not apply to medical payments to others – meaning the insurance company covers the first dollar of the claim up to policy limits.
Do I need to add the coverage or is it built-in?
Most home insurance policies provide a minimum amount of medical payments to others coverage – generally around $1000 or so. But if you’re the type that frequently has guests over, you may want to consider maxing out this coverage as it’s not too expensive to do so….generally $25-$50/yr to increase the coverage to $5000.
