Perhaps once or twice a month we’ll be speaking with a customer about auto insurance and they’ll request full coverage auto insurance. It’s typically in reference to a recently financed car purchase or a new leased car purchase. Many times, it’s the bank or the dealership that tells the customer that because there is money owed on the vehicle that the customer will need full coverage auto insurance.
What we have found though is that full coverage auto insurance means something different to everybody. To some it means if something happens to the car itself that it’s covered. To others it means that they have every coverage that the insurance company offers – essentially a policy without any gaps in coverage.
So why all the confusion on what full coverage means?
It’s because full coverage is not a term insurance companies use to define a policy. Moreover, there hasn’t been a standard set for full coverage by the carriers or the state regulators.
So what are your to do?
Instead of asking for full coverage, have the answers ready for these six questions before requesting a quote:
- Is your vehicle leased or does it have a loan on it?
- If not, do you want your insurance to cover your vehicle if it’s stolen or if you get in a at fault accident?
- If you get in a wreck or if somebody steals your car – do you want your insurance company to pay for a rental car?
- If your car breaks down and you need to call a tow truck – do you want your insurance company to reimburse you for the charge?
- If you get in an at-fault accident – do you want your insurance company to pay for the damage to the other persons car and their injuries, if applicable?
- If somebody runs into you and you’re injured – do you want your insurance company to pay for your medical bills, lost wages and pain and suffering?
By having the answers to these questions ready when you request an insurance quote, you’ll be setting a framework for a meaningful discussion with your insurance agent or insurance company so that they can tailor a policy to your specific needs.
