Uninsured Motorist Coverage – What you need to know!

Uninsured Motorist Coverage – What you need to know!

What does Uninsured Motorist Coverage cover?

Almost every customer we speak with thinks that uninsured motorist coverage in the State of Florida covers injuries and the damage to the vehicle should they get hit by an uninsured motorist.  This is only partially correct.  In Florida, uninsured motorist coverage will generally only cover your injuries, lost wages, pain and suffering if you’re hit by a driver who either doesn’t have insurance or doesn’t have enough insurance.

But what about your car?

Not covered.  That’s right, your car is not covered by uninsured motorist coverage.

So how do you get your car fixed?

It’s actually collision coverage that covers your car if you’re hit by an uninsured or underinsured motorist.  If you have collision coverage, your policy will cover the repairs, but it will be subject to your deductible.  Remember that deductible you picked when you purchased the policy (commonly around $500)?  So you’ll be out of pocket that amount if you’re hit by an uninsured motorist and want your insurance company to pay for the repairs to you vehicle.
