Recently we had a customer call in a panic because a hot water valve in the kitchen broke off. Hot water was literally spraying across the kitchen in gallons and flooding out the kitchen and dining room while we were on the phone. The customer was uncertain what to do and was desperately seeking some guidance.
What you need to know
Every home has water shutoffs at certain supply lines. They’re those little knobs you see behind toilets and under sinks. These will shut off water to the corresponding fixtures. But in this situation, it was one of those valves that failed. In situations such as these, you need to know where the main water shutoff is to the entire house. It’s typically is outside of the home. As a side note, if you shut off the main water valve to the house … it’s probably a good idea to turn the hot water heater down to its lowest setting to ensure you don’t damage the water heater.
One more tip
Now, in the situation with my customer, hot water sprayed across the kitchen for nearly 10 minutes. But could you imagined what would have happened if this family were on vacation when the valve failed? The water could have run for days! Therefore, we always recommend shutting out the water to the house if you’re going on vacation. Same thing goes for the hot water heater. In fact, many newer hot water heaters have a vacation setting on the temperature knob.
