How to determine your auto insurance coverage….

Often times, we have customers request an auto quote and they’re uncertain how much coverage they need.  The following is the general process we use to determine adequate coverage those customers.

Start with the car…

If someone were to steal your car, or if a tree were to fall on I,t or if it were damaged in a hailstorm, or if you had a crack in your windshield would you want your insurance to coverage it?  If the answer is yes, then you’ll need comprehensive coverage.

If you were to get in an at-fault accident or if someone were to run into your car and leave the scene of the accident or not have enough coverage to pay for the repairs to your car would you want your insurance to cover it?  If the answer is yes, you’ll need collision coverage.

Then look at some of the common add-on coverages…

If your vehicle is being repaired due to a covered comprehensive or collision claim do you want your insurance to provide you with a rental car?  If the answer is yes, you’ll need rental reimbursement coverage.  If you break down and your vehicle needs to be towed would you like for your insurance to reimburse you for the towing expense?  If the answer is yes, you’ll need emergency roadside coverage.

Lastly, we look at the more important coverages…

If somebody runs into your car and you’re injured, and the at-fault party either they doesn’t have insurance or they don’t have enough insurance would you like for your policy to pay for your injuries, lost wages, and pain and suffering.  If the answer is yes, you’ll need to add uninsured motorist coverage and then work with the agent to determine how much coverage you’ll need – twenty five thousand, fifty thousand, one hundred thousand?

Then we look at liability coverage.  Liability coverage will provide coverage should you get in an at-fault accident.  It’s generally broken up into two sections – bodily injury and property damage.  Bodily injury is the amount of coverage you’ll have to pay for other people’s injuries in the event your involved in an at-fault accident.  Property damage is the coverage you have to pay for the repairs to their car.  How much coverage should you have?  As much as your budget will allow.
