Have your home insurance rates increased?

There are times in the Florida home insurance marketplace where the majority of home insurance carriers file for rate increases on or around the same timeframe.  When this happens, it can be difficult to find a competitively priced home insurance policy.  Here are four things you can do to bring down your home insurance policy:

1. Review your coverages to make certain you are not over-insured.  When doing so, look at the main cost drivers within the policy – Dwelling Coverage and Personal Property.  Remember that the dwelling coverage is not the market value of your home but the cost to rebuild your home in the event of total loss.
2. Look at your deductibles.  If you have low deductibles and would be comfortable with a higher deductible, ask you insurance company or agent how the increased deductible will affect your premium.
3. Check your policy for wind mitigation discounts and then ask your insurance company or agent if they think you could benefit from a wind mitigation inspection.  This inspection reflects certain wind mitigation features to the home and each one of these features is a discount to the wind portion of your home insurance.
4. Shop around using independent agents.  Independent agents generally represent several insurance carriers and can typically shop your policy with multiple carriers in a short amount of time saving you from making multiple calls to multiple companies.
