With dog bites making up one-third of all homeowner liability claims, it’s no wonder why animal liability has become a hot topic in the insurance industry. Get this, the average dog bite claim is just over$32,000 and payouts collectively total over half a billion dollars in the US annually.
This is what insurance actuaries call an outlier. When outliers happen, insurance companies generally respond by doing one of three things.
- They exclude coverage. This means that they will have you sign a waiver acknowledging that if you have a pet and the pet injures someone, they won’t cover it.
- They can charge additional premium to add the coverage back in. This means that although they have excluded the coverage in their standard policy, they sometimes will allow you to purchase animal liability as an add-on coverage.
- The option which has become the most common in the industry, they will not offer insurance if you have a certain breed of dog in the household.
The list of ineligible dog breeds is quite lengthy and includes Pitbull’s, German Shepard’s, Rottweilers, etc. etc. But here’s what you need to know if you have one of these dogs breed in your home…..you can still get insurance.
While most insurance companies will simply refuse to offer you insurance on your home if you have certain animals in the home – there are insurance carriers that will offer you insurance at competitive rates even if you have a Pitbull, a German Shepard or a Rottweiler in the home. They simply have you sign an acknowledgement excluding liability coverage should your pet injure somebody else.
