Today we are talking about whether you can get wind mitigation credits applied to your current home insurance policy or do you have to wait until your next renewal.
Many time’s we have customers call in who have just purchased a home and the home, at the time of inspection, did not qualify for the opening protection credits. In this scenario, we are talking about storm shutters or impact rated windows.
Generally, the home does not qualify for the discount due to the wind mitigation inspection reflecting one or more openings to the home not being fully protected. Depending on the age and location of the home, this could mean the loss of a $1000 discount or more.
Naturally, our insureds want to get that discount back as soon possible, but they can’t improve the home until they own the home. In these situations, here are the steps to follow to get the discounts applied to the policy:
- The insured can purchase the insurance without the discount
- Have the shutters installed to bring the home into compliance with the standard set for the wind mitigation credit
- Circle back to the original inspector to request another wind mitigation inspection.
- Send the revised inspection to the insurance company/agent.
Once we have the revised wind mitigation inspection showing that the home now qualifies for the discount, we update the policy accordingly and a pro-rated refund is generated and mailed to the insured.
