Often, we hear people mention that their broken windshield is covered without a deductible simply because they live in Florida and that’s what Florida requires.
Before we get into what is or what is not covered, let’s first talk about broken windshields:
So you’re driving down the road and a rock hits your windshield causing a small crack. It doesn’t look all that bad. And let’s face it – you’re really busy not really in the mood to pay any money to have your broken windshield replaced. So you decide you’ll get to it later. A few weeks go by and another rock hits your windshield. This time, however, because of the initial crack affecting the integrity of the windshield the second rock goes through the windshield causing injury to the driver or one of the passengers.
What’s the point?
The State of Florida is in the business of mitigating as much risk as possible for the citizens of the State. With this scenario I just described in mind, the good folks in Tallahassee wanted to remove one of the potential barriers to consumers getting their windshield repaired or replaced. There is actually a Florida statute that requires insurance companies to cover the repair or replacement of the broken windshield without a deductible. However, the vehicle must have comprehensive coverage for the broken windshield to be repaired or replaced. If you do not have comprehensive coverage on your auto insurance policy, then you’ll be paying for your broken windshield out of pocket.
What should I do?
If you want to ensure you’re covered for a broken windshield, check your auto insurance policy and look for comprehensive coverage (sometimes this coverage is called Other than Collision). You can also call your agent or your insurance company and they’ll be able to tell you if you have this coverage.
