There are four things you need to know about your home insurance to ensure the installed pool complies with the requirements set forth by most home insurance carriers.
A swimming pool is classified by insurance companies as an attractive nuisance, which means it is an appealing item that may present a danger to children who encounter it. As such, home insurance carriers will require the pool to be secured. This means that the pool area, typically the back yard, will need to be fenced in and the gate that allows access to the back yard will need to be a self-latching gate. Alternatively, you can opt for a screen enclosure going over the pool so long as the screen enclosure has a locking screen door.
There are two features to a pool that can that cause you to get dropped by your current insurance carrier. One is a slide and the other is a diving board. These two features pose too much of a liability concern for insurance carriers and most carriers render pools with these features as ineligible for coverage.
You’ll want to add the cost of pool construction to your dwelling coverage if it’s attached to the home or as an “other structure” if it’s set apart from the dwelling by a clear space. Doing so will ensure you are adequately insured should you experience a claim event.
